I don’t think we’ve ever had a single varietal Viognier on the shelves before. Didn’t think we ever would. I’m down for surprises though. All the ripe, rich stonefruit you’d expect from the grape, but picked perfectly and lifted by some leesy reduction. A freshness I’ve never seen from Viognier, and something I doubt I’ll see again. A great argument for drinking the producer over the varietal or the region, and an excuse to take a look at something you might have previously dismissed. This producer seems to have flipped the script on what Marlborough can and should taste like. Another thing you simply must get in your glass if you take wine even semi-seriously.
